Ten traps for proofreaders
- Heads and subheads – believe it or not we often forget to check these.
- The first few lines after a head – for some reason we just assume this is correct.
- Strings of small words – (if it is in the basket…).
- Proper names – check and recheck these.
- Numbers – transposed numbers are a common error.
- Sequential lists – is the numbered or alphabetical list in sequence? If the text says there are six reasons, are there six in the numbered list?
- Quotes, brackets and parentheses – it is easy to leave out one of the set.
- Footnotes, tables, figures, charts – are they numbered in order?
- Table of contents – does it reflect the headings in the text and are the page numbers correct?
- Inconsistent style – always makes sure you get a style and stick with it. For example:
- dates (will it be day, month, year OR month, day year)
- measurements (imperial or metric)
- numbers (will you use commas or not in four-digit numbers)
- capitalization (will you use upper and lower case for titles, e.g., chair of the board or Chair of the Board).
